After months of isolation, Isherwood "Ish" Williams learns that much of the world has been stricken by a mysterious disease. Despite his instincts to remain isolated, Ish leads the development of a new civilization.

The effect of the story is that someone 80 years ago was writing about a global pandemic and its ultimate impact. Ish represents the reader, someone who has not had to watch people die, watch the news, feel despair and defeat.
It connects very well to the poem of Ozymandias
The people he meets represent how people can deal with these great losses. The weakness of man and the bravery of humanity in its triumphs.

I look forward to the rest of the episodes and am rereading the novel again. "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
