The first part with the children is very good. For the sake of the audience, the film should have ended here. Gilles Lellouche would have directed one of the best French teen romances of the decade. The rest of the film, the second act, is awful.
But it eliminates the exaggerated and caricatured toxic masculinity
The actors François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos lack chemistry, and their performances in this film are bland and uncompromising. I suspect that both actors should start rethinking their careers in French cinema after the two newcomers, Mallory Wanecque and Malik Frikah, outshone and stole the show in this confusing, mediocre film. At first glance, the film seems like a modern version of The Count of Monte Cristo. It reminded me of the old story of the resentful young rebel who returns for revenge and seeks out his beloved.
Which we have already seen
The stylized and cheap male gaze. And halfway through and towards the end of the second act, the plot loses credibility. The problem is primarily the strange determination the film shows to demand originality in every shot, yet never achieves it. Every time he makes a decision, he always chooses the most formal, the most obvious.
